Half-Day Johannesburg and Soweto Tour

Our tour is designed to give first-time visitors to Johannesburg an overall impression of "Egoli" - the City of Gold, South Africa’s commercial and financial capital. We first take a look around the northern suburbs, then continue to the hustle and bustle of Hillbrow and Braamfontein, home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa. We drive through the downtown area to the Carlton Centre, for a view of the city from the enclosed deck on the 50th floor. Onward to Soweto (South Western Township), largest black residential area in South Africa, where we see a fascinating contrast to Rosebank and Sandton in the north. This sprawling “city within a city” is home to approximately 2-million people, many of whom work in various parts of the greater metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand. Our tour includes all the major points of interest, such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath taxi rank, Freedom Square, Hector Pieterson Memorial and Nelson Mandela’s former home.

Take the cable car or walk up Table Mountain, visit the colourful Malay quarter or meander through the wonderful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Browse through the vibrant Greenmarket Square, take a boat trip to Robben Island or simply relax on the beach. When you want to range further, the Cape Peninsula offers one of the finest coastal drives in Africa to the Cape of Good Hope. Here you might see whales breeching just off the bay or quirky jackass penguins on Boulder’s beach.

Description of the Hotel:
The nautical theme chosen for the Portswood Hotel has been carried throughout the private and public areas of the hotel. All the rooms offer views of either the harbour or the splendour of Table Mountain. The bright and spacious rooms are fully equipped with individual air-conditioning, television with DSTV, tea and coffee machines, en-suite bathroom with bath, shower and toilet, and direct dial telephones. Although it is situated on the Waterfront, the hotel is far enough removed from the working harbour to ensure a good nights sleep. The 80 seater Quarterback Restaurant is a relaxed yet elegant restaurant uniquely housed in the old Convict Station building. This beautifully restored national monument with its rich history is the perfect place to sample the restaurant's legendary breakfasts, sumptuous buffets and comprehensive menus.
